Genesis 28:22
“And this stone, which I have set for a pillar, shall be God’s house: and of all that thou shalt give me I will surely give the tenth unto thee.“
In the Bible, numbers have a significant place. The number ten is used to show and represent the whole of a matter. In Genesis 24, ten represented the total of Abraham’s wealth. The oldest servant took 10 camels of Abraham’s to show that he was in charge of all that Abraham had. His job was to get a bride for Isaac and this was proof that he was representing Abraham. He had the authority to offer whatever the bride’s family required for their daughter.
In the Old Testament we are told that they were to bring their tithes (10%) and offerings into the storehouse. In the New Testament we are told to bring our tithes (10%) upon the first day of the week.
Now, if we are told to bring the 10th, we are to be representing everything that we have. In other words, the giving of the tithe is saying that we are giving everything to God that we have. If we give less, we are holding back from a full surrender. We are saying that we are surrendering only a part of what we have. The rest is for ME! Can you imagine a groom saying this to his bride at their wedding, “with all my worldly goods, I do thee wed except this and that”? No, I don’t think so!!!
What are the consequences of not tithing? We are going to be judged on our faithfulness to obeying God’s Word. If we are not faithful in money matters, we are not going to be counted worthy to reign with Him in His kingdom. “If therefore ye have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who will commit to your trust the true riches?” – Luke 16:11
